Hi my name is Shelly and my husband, son and I moved to Port Townsend three years ago after spending two years on Orcas Island as caretakers on a small organic farm. Before Orcas we lived in Fairbanks, Juneau and Sitka Alaska. My husband spent 51 years in Alaska, I was there for 28 years and our son was born in Fairbanks but life is full of change and we are now so happy to live in a place where flowers bloom in February.
Truthfully I never expected my retirement job would be this much fun, it is such a pleasure to serve the port Townsend community by working at Quimper Mercantile. This store reminds me of Geiger's Long Valley Market, the mercantile in the small logging community I was raised in. They had everything. You could buy groceries, a book, the perfect birthday gift, new school clothes, a wrist watch, building materials or a pickle from the pickle barrel. Quimper Mercantile has that same flavor with an amazing assortment of truly necessary items just waiting to be discovered someplace in the store. Working at Quimper Mercantile closely parallels my favorite childhood activity, which was arranging my grandmother's pantry and playing storekeeper with my brothers and sisters.
About me: I graduated from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks a long time ago and worked for 25 years in the counseling field. I've also had the joy of being a massage therapist, a yoga teacher, an elementary school librarian and a book store clerk. I love walking on the beach in the early morning, reading, journal writing, gardening and playing with children.
